Happy Birthday to Me

Honestly, this year has been a lot. Some things were expected, some weren’t. There were many disappointments, and yet just as many encouragements.

I made friends with people I never thought I would become close to. I learned to cherish myself, to push myself even when I couldn’t answer why. I learned how to just do it.

I have failed and passed so many times this year. I have cried a lot, alone, unwilling to share how I feel, sometimes with others because I couldn’t help it. I’m a very defensive person.

I’ve laughed too, by myself and with my family, friends and even strangers.

With everything that has happened, I turn a year older today. But, I’m not asking myself questions in this age… well, problematic ones anyway.

I plan on moving and ascending, reaching my limits, setting boundaries and becoming better than before.

There’s this question they ask, something like ‘what would you like to say to the five-year you, if you could?’ I would say, ‘when you get older, and you start to realize everything isn’t the way you’ve thought it to be, don’t be afraid. Even when everything you hear around you isn’t positive, give yourself light. Even when friendships become something you can’t contain, let it be and let it go. Question everything and find answers. And when you find yourself becoming someone you never thought to become, it’s alright to stare in the mirror and trust yourself to become better.

Happy birthday Oluwaseun. The future is unknown, the past unchangeable, but today is right in front of you. Live it, feel it, trust it, and have a wonderful day.
